Mental health support centre for Rohingyas opens in Ukhiya

About 225,863 people have already received mental health services through nine other centres in Cox’s Bazar. A Mental Health and Psycho-social Support (MHPSS) centre for Rohingya refugees was launched at Kutupalong in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.

Syed Mahbubul Haque, assistant secretary of Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and in-charge of camp 6, inaugurated the centre.

Hasina Akter Huq, area director of the Humanitarian Crisis Management Program (HCMP) of Brac; Shah Alam, head of shelter under HCMP; Riffat Jahan Nahreen, team lead, child protection, HCMP; Rubel Das, assistant program officer of United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR); ANM Mahmudul Alam, MHPSS officer, UNHCR were present at the inauguration, among others.

HM Rakibul Islam, office in-charge of MHPSS under the HCMP of BRAC, delivered the welcome speech.

Huq said Rohingya refugees are the most oppressed people in the world and the centre was built for their mental health and psycho-social support

In her address, Hasina Akter Huq termed the centre an important initiative of Brac, which is working for human rights and the development of oppressed people

“We are emphasising involvement of the local community for successful implementation of the initiative,” she said.
