Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming on Sunday expressed hope that the repatriation of Rohingya people from Bangladesh to Myanmar would begin this year.
‘China is making relentless effort to speed up early repatriation of Rohingya people…this year we’ll achieve the goal,’ he said in a press conference styled as spring dialogue with China in Dhaka. This time the relevant parties, including the military-run government of Myanmar ‘is more constructive’ and is showing a ‘positive attitude’ on Rohingya repatriation, he said.
Jiming, however, refused to provide details until steps were materialized.
Safe and dignified repatriation of the displaced people would be the key principle of repatriation, he said, admitting that there was no ‘significant officially recognized repatriation’ since the launching of a tripartite mechanism in 2019 involving Bangladesh, China and Myanmar to expedite the process.
