Campaigning organisation Progressive Voice has called on the United Nations (UN) to investigate its involvement in the recent Rohingya refugees repatriation pilot project and take necessary action.
The Myanmar junta that committed genocide against the Rohingya community in 2017 and has systematically persecuted and exploited the Rohingya population for decades for political gain is proceeding with a plan to repatriate Rohingya refugees from the Bangladesh border.
While the military play by the same old book, what is shocking is that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and World Food Programme (WFP) – the two UN agencies that are supposed to protect this most vulnerable population – are involved the junta’s plan.
Progressive Voice says it is crystal clear that now is not the right time for the return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland, as there is a complete absence of conditions necessary for their safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable return.
